The sun came out briefly this morning but it is quite cold… only 9 C. Pretty cool for this date.
We are heading out on a boat to go to Vigur Island to see the puffins and other birds.
Gisli, his wife and 9 year old son are the owners of the island. It is a private reserve and eiderdown farm.
Here is the largest black guillemot colony in the North Atlantic. They are related to puffins but can only dive to half the depth of that which the puffins do. Puffins migrate to Labrador but the guillemots only across the channel.
There are 10,000 eiderdown ducks here in spring.
Arctic terns fly from Antarctica. There is a colony of 2000 here… They are a pissed-off species… will dive bomb you so you are to hold sticks close to your head to protect you. You also got to be careful not to step on any of the chicks…. they are not too bright.
There are 50,000 puffin burrows on the island(150,000 if the birds are mulling about). Chicks won’t be seen cuz they are hiding 2 metres below the ground, in the burrows.
The sun actually came out…. up to 11 C….nice!

Okay, I give up. I have trying to respond through the blog, but I’m not sure it’s working. I have tried every means of jiggery-pokery to get a comment through, but the minute I try to send the pipe, everything turns grey.
Anyways, I loved the comment about Arctic Terns that you described as “…not too bright.”. Sounds like my distant relatives, the Dodo. The Puffins are one of the species of birds that I can tolerate, except that they need to learn to eat with their mouths closed. I was against owls and woodpeckers, but after a Greek pigeon shat on me in Athens, I don’t like them either.
