April 3/26-Enniskillen-Sligo-Dublin

Enniskillen is 2 only streets with many different churches because so many immigrants have come from different parts of the world. It is built on island surrounded by lakes. A canal goes far inland, is a great attraction to tourists.

On to Sligo, the home of WB Yeats…. He was not an academic …. On the spectrum-dyslexic ….more of a romanic. What inspired him… lakes, chasing women. Not a great father.

Guide brought up the fact of sexual abuse by the Catholic priests. Coverup by hierarchy that eventually made payouts that paid for education, hospitals, etc. All the priest weren’t all bad. They did a lot of good deeds too.

Nobel prize winners Yeats, Shaw, all were Protestant

Shamus Heaney poet… Catholic. He translated Greek classics into English.

Just past Bundorun there is big surf on the North Atlantic. Surfing has begun to be very popular. Lord Mountbatten… the Queen’s uncle…. Retired here but was murdered here in 1979 by IRA…. an innocent man according to our guide. They blew up him on his boat…. Fishing was his everyday pastime.

Sligo is a college town

2.14 Euro/ litre for diesel here…ouch!

River Shannon cruises  make Carrick-on-Shannon an attractive place to come.

Home tomorrow but going to try to find Irish music on our last night with the majority of our travelling buddies.
